Catalina

“Your face is new around here.” Glancing to my left, I see a young blond-haired guy. He sits in the vacant seat next to me at the high-top table I’m occupying. I’ve spent the past two hours drinking and talking with Chloe and Amy, but they’ve both gone to the restroom together.

“Yes, I’m not from here,” I reply.

“Ah. I can tell that now. How long have you been in Australia?” he asks after he’s taken a long drink of his beer.

“Just a few days. I’m here for business and will be returning home once it’s finished.”

“Well, it’s lovely to have you here. I’m Bradley by the way,” he says as he holds out his hand.

“Catalina.”

“A beautiful name for a beautiful lady.”

“Thanks,” I uncomfortably reply.

“What kind of business are you here for?”

“I’m a personal assistant and had to travel here for my boss.”

“That sucks that it’s right on Christmas. Is there anyone back at home missing you over the holidays?” He noticeably runs his gaze over my left hand, looking for a ring.

“Yes,” I reply.

I’m talking about my family, but he doesn’t need to know that.

“That’s unfortunate for him.”

Before I can say anymore, Chloe and Amy are sitting down on the stools on the other side of the table. “Sorry we were gone for so long,” Chloe says. “Bradley. How has Jessica been? She must be ready to pop soon.” Chloe gives him a knowing look.

I see Bradley slightly flinch, but he keeps his smile in place as he shifts around to face Chloe. “She is great. The baby isn’t due for a few more weeks.”

“That’s lovely. You say hi to her for me when you get home,” Chloe says with a dismissive tone.

“I’ll let her know,” Bradley mumbles his reply as he stands. “Ladies, I better keep moving. People to see and network with. Catalina, it was nice meeting you.” He smiles down at me then turns and walks away.

I watch him until he’s out of site. Then look at Chloe. “Who is he?” I ask.

“He works at Bianchi Transports in human resources,” she answers. “He is forever flirting with female workers in the office and with ladies at work functions.”

“It is a known fact that he cheats on his wife,” Amy adds.

“Oh, dear. I was sitting here, and he approached me.”

I don’t want to be labeled a homewrecker.

“It’s okay hun,” Amy says as she reaches across the table and places her hand over mine in a tenderly way. “We both saw him while we were ordering our drinks. At least now he’ll leave you alone since Chloe mentioned Jessica in front of you.”

“Hopefully,” I mutter. “I don’t want any part of what he was going to offer.”

“You defiantly don’t. Word is that he has the goods but doesn’t know how to use them.”

“Gross. I didn’t need to know that,” Amy says to Chloe as she scrunches her face up in disgust.

“Me either,” I add.

We talk for a while and end up on the topic about the differences between America and Australia.
